I’m in the middle of a Bible Watchtower Publication study with one of my relatives. I’ve never been a JW. He was born into the Cult. If someone was playing the role of an “interested” study with one of your JW relatives, what questions or issues would you hope they bring up to help wake them from their slumber? I don’t expect miracles from this encounter with my JW relative, so please leave any negativity out of this thread. I’m fully aware of the futility of trying to slowly help a JW come to the realization that they were born into a doomsday cult. I casually brought up the old light which is still in their “Bible Teach” book about the generation of 1914, and he immediately got uncomfortable and tried to change the subject. I plan on bringing up the “Mediator” issue with him, we’ll see how well that goes over. I already know that he believes that Jesus is his Mediator. So any suggestions on questions to ask? My relative has young children, so if I can play even a small part in preventing another “generation” from being sucked into the Watchtower Cult I will feel as though the time I spent on this study was more than worth it.

A former member of my old cult got a visit from active members of your former cult. LOL
by garyneal inthis is too funny, someone who is a former member of my old cult came our facebook page and talked about two witnesses coming to her door today.. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_35429320847.
jocelyn zichtermanoh, the irony.
i know we are not supposed to talk about other groups here, but just real quick: two jw's just showed up at my door--haven't had this happen in a while.

The Watchtower certainly doesn't have a patent on spiritual abuse, many other groups have employed the same cult like tactics to destroy families and keep their followers captive. You were in the IFB? How long?

I had a completely unfounded and nasty rumor started by my spouse’s family. How did we find out about it? One of my spouse’s siblings actually called us to express concern!!!!!! Maybe there is hope for that one sibling who actually cared enough to try and help instead of just gossiping about what happens to those that leave the cult's "spiritual protection". We quickly informed her that the rumor was 100% false, and we were in fact very happy and doing quite well. I imagine her cognitive dissonance must have increased a little after that conversation.
Which makes me wonder, is the starting of rumors by JW's about those that leave simply an expected byproduct of JW's trying to maintain a psychological balance between what they've been taught and actual reality? If a JW leaves the organization and doesn't become miserable out in the “world” it could be psychologically unsettling to those JW’s still trapped inside the group.

Are we talking about the same group of annointed that the Governing Body calls mentally deranged?
WT 8/11 "A number of factors-including past religious beliefs or even mental or emotional imbalance-might cause some to assume mistakenly that they have the heavenly calling."

Is It Normal for a JW to give a Return Visit print-outs of information?
by Broken Promises inyesterday i had another visit from a jw who has started calling on me after a few discussions.
i wrote about her in a previous thread: http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/watchtower/beliefs/209531/1/jw-at-my-door-admits-that-shee28099s-had-doubts i'm pretending to be an interested one, and we've had some nice discussions.
i am trying to get her to research her religion via "innocent" questions i bring up.. i've noticed that each time she calls on me, she's given me printed information.

Ask her quite innocently if she believes Jesus is her Mediator. Let her research that one.

Whenever I find Watchtower pamphlets littering public places I simply write JWFACTS.COM on them. It's much more productive then throwing them in the trash. It also doesn't come off to an "interested one" as an attack; it's simply a recommendation of a website. I also wonder about the JW who comes back to dump more literature and sees the website address on their precious pamphlets. People are naturally curious, no matter how much an organization tries to suppress these instincts I think there will be some who take a peek at the website.
